Getting an SMSL M3 working on Windows 11 should normally be straightforward. Connect the DAC to the computer through USB, select the USB input on the M3, and choose the detected USB audio device as the Windows output. The M3 is designed to work without a separate manufacturer driver, so Windows should configure it automatically.
Problems can still occur. The SMSL M3 may not appear in Sound settings, Windows may report that the driver cannot be found, or the device may be visible but produce no sound. It can also disconnect after sleep, stop working after an update, show a Device Manager error, or produce crackling audio.
The right fix depends on where the connection is failing. A charge-only USB cable prevents Windows from detecting the DAC at all. An incorrect input or output selection causes silence even though the hardware is working. A damaged Windows audio configuration can make a properly connected M3 appear as an unknown device.
I have arranged the solutions below from the safest and quickest checks to the more advanced repairs. Start at the beginning and test the M3 after each major change.
Does the SMSL M3 Work With Windows 11?
Yes, the SMSL M3 can work with Windows 11 as a USB DAC and headphone amplifier.
The important detail is that you should not need to hunt for a special “SMSL M3 Windows 11 driver.” The official SMSL legacy product page describes the M3 as a desktop DAC and headphone amplifier that requires no driver.
Windows includes built-in support for standard USB audio devices. Microsoft also documents the USB audio class driver included with current versions of Windows. The exact name displayed in Windows can vary. Depending on how the M3 identifies itself and which input you use, you may see a name such as:
- SMSL M3
- USB Audio Device
- USB Audio DAC
- Speakers (USB Audio Device)
- Digital Audio Interface
A generic-looking name does not automatically mean Windows installed the wrong driver.
Quick SMSL M3 Setup on Windows 11
Use this sequence when connecting the M3 for the first time:
- Turn the volume down on the M3.
- Connect the M3 directly to a USB port on the computer with a known-good data cable.
- Turn on the M3 and select its USB input.
- Wait up to a minute for Windows to configure the device.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the SMSL M3 or USB audio device.
- Connect headphones to the headphone output, or connect the RCA output to powered speakers or an amplifier.
- Start playback and raise the Windows and M3 volume gradually.
Do not begin at maximum volume. A DAC and headphone amplifier can produce a much louder signal than a laptop headphone jack.
If the device appears and plays normally, no additional driver installation is necessary.
How the M3 Connection Works
Understanding the signal path makes troubleshooting much easier.
When using USB, the connection is:
Windows application > Windows audio output > USB cable > SMSL M3 > headphones, powered speakers or amplifier
Every part of that chain must be correct. Windows can send sound to the laptop speakers while the M3 is connected. The M3 can be set to optical input while the computer is sending audio through USB. The DAC can also receive the signal correctly while an amplifier, speaker cable or headphone connection prevents you from hearing it.
The M3 is a DAC and headphone amplifier. Its analog line output is intended for powered speakers or another amplifier. It is not designed to drive ordinary passive speakers directly from the RCA output.
USB, Optical and Coaxial Connections Behave Differently
The input you use changes what you should expect to see in Windows.
USB connection
With a USB connection, Windows communicates directly with the DAC. The M3 or a generic USB audio device should appear under Sound settings and Device Manager.
If it does not appear, investigate the USB cable, USB port, Windows audio driver, device power and USB controller.
Optical or coaxial connection
With optical or coaxial, Windows communicates with the computer’s digital audio output, not directly with the M3. The Windows output may therefore be named:
- Digital Audio (S/PDIF)
- Realtek Digital Output
- Optical Output
- The name of a sound card or motherboard audio device
The SMSL M3 may not appear by name in Windows when connected only through optical or coaxial. That is normal.
Select the computer’s digital output in Windows and select the matching optical or coaxial input on the M3. If Windows is set to the laptop speakers or HDMI output, the M3 will receive nothing.

1. Fully Power-Cycle the M3 and Computer
A normal Windows restart does not always reset every USB controller or externally powered device. Start with a complete power cycle:
- Close audio applications.
- Shut down Windows completely.
- Turn off the M3.
- Disconnect its USB and power connections.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Start the computer without the M3 connected.
- Sign in to Windows.
- Connect and turn on the M3.
- Wait for Windows to detect it.
This clears temporary USB enumeration and power-state problems. It is particularly useful when the M3 stopped working after sleep, hibernation, a Windows update or a sudden disconnect.
2. Confirm That the M3 Is Set to USB Input
The M3 supports more than one digital input. It will not play the computer’s USB audio while it is listening to optical or coaxial input.
Use the input control on the M3 to select USB. Check its indicators rather than assuming the previous selection was retained after the device lost power.
If you are intentionally using optical or coaxial, select that input instead and choose the corresponding digital output in Windows.
An input mismatch is one of the most common explanations when Windows shows normal playback activity but the headphones remain silent.
3. Replace the USB Cable
Not every USB cable transfers data. Some cables supplied with chargers provide power only. The M3 may turn on through such a cable while remaining completely invisible to Windows.
Use a cable that you have already confirmed can transfer files or operate another USB device. Also inspect both connectors for looseness, corrosion, dirt or physical damage.
A failing cable can cause:
- No detection
- Repeated connection sounds
- Random disconnects
- Crackling or interrupted audio
- “USB device not recognized”
- Device Manager Code 43
Keep the cable reasonably short and avoid unnecessary extensions while troubleshooting.
4. Connect Directly to Another USB Port
Disconnect the M3 from hubs, monitor USB ports, docks, keyboard passthrough ports and extension cables. Connect it directly to the computer.
On a desktop, test a rear motherboard USB port. Front-panel ports pass through an internal cable and can introduce another possible fault. It is also worth trying both a USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.x port if the computer provides them.
Disconnect other unnecessary USB audio devices during testing. Multiple DACs, headsets, webcams, capture devices and docking stations can make output selection confusing or place extra load on the same USB controller.
If one port works consistently and another does not, the M3 driver is probably not the main problem. Continue using the stable port and update the computer’s chipset or USB controller drivers.
5. Select the Correct Windows 11 Output
Windows can leave the laptop speakers, monitor, HDMI output or Bluetooth headphones selected after the M3 is connected.
To select the M3:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Sound.
- Find Output.
- Select the M3, USB Audio Device or similarly named output.
- Play audio and watch the output level meter.
You can also select an output from the taskbar:
- Select the speaker icon.
- Select the output selector beside the volume control.
- Choose the USB audio device.
If the level meter moves but there is no sound, Windows is sending audio somewhere. Check the M3 input, its volume, the headphone connection, the RCA cable and the connected speaker or amplifier.
6. Make the M3 the Default Playback Device
Older desktop programs and some games use the default device rather than following the output currently selected in Quick Settings.
Set the M3 as the default:
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select More sound settings.
- Open the Playback tab.
- Right-click the M3 or USB audio device.
- Select Set as Default Device.
- If available, also select Set as Default Communication Device when you want calls to use it.
- Select Apply.
Restart any application that was already open. Some programs read the default audio device only when they launch.
7. Check the App-Specific Audio Output
Windows 11 can assign different outputs to individual applications. A music player may be locked to the laptop speakers even after the M3 becomes the system default.
To check:
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select Volume mixer.
- Find the affected application.
- Set its output to Default or the SMSL M3.
- Confirm the app is not muted and its volume is not zero.
- Close and reopen the application.
If every app works except one, do not reinstall the entire Windows audio system. Reset that application’s audio preferences first.
8. Look for the M3 in Device Manager
Device Manager shows whether Windows detects the USB hardware and whether its driver is loading.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Expand Audio inputs and outputs.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the M3, USB Audio Device, an unknown device or an entry with a yellow warning symbol.
If nothing changes when you unplug and reconnect the M3, focus on the cable, USB port, device power and hardware.
If an entry appears with a warning symbol:
- Double-click it.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Record the error code before changing anything.
Select View > Show hidden devices if the M3 worked previously but is no longer visible. Grey entries are disconnected device records and do not necessarily indicate a fault.
9. Reinstall the Built-In USB Audio Device
Reinstalling the detected device can repair a damaged or incomplete Windows configuration.
- Disconnect the M3.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the M3 or USB audio entry associated with it.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart the computer.
- Reconnect the M3 directly to a USB port.
- Allow Windows to configure it again.
If you are unsure which entry belongs to the M3, disconnect and reconnect it while watching Device Manager. Remove only the entry that appears and disappears with the DAC.
Do not uninstall every sound device indiscriminately. HDMI audio, motherboard audio, Bluetooth audio and USB audio may all be listed in the same section.
10. Do Not Install Random SMSL M3 Driver Packages
Search results and driver-download websites may claim to provide a Windows 11 driver for the M3. That does not mean the package is official, necessary or safe.
The manufacturer describes this model as requiring no driver. Windows should use its built-in USB audio support. A random legacy or repackaged driver can create:
- Driver signature errors
- Code 39 or Code 52
- Blue screens
- Audio service conflicts
- Security risks
- Failure after Windows updates
If you already installed an unofficial package, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps and remove its device entry in Device Manager. Restart Windows, then reconnect the M3 and allow the built-in driver to load.

11. Install Windows and Computer Manufacturer Updates
The M3 may not need a dedicated driver, but it still depends on the computer’s USB controller, chipset and Windows audio components.
First check Windows Update:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available quality updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Review relevant chipset, USB or audio updates carefully.
Next, visit the official support page for the exact laptop, motherboard or desktop model. Install current Windows 11 chipset and USB controller drivers where the manufacturer provides them.
Avoid automatic third-party driver-updater utilities. They can match the wrong package to a USB controller or replace a stable manufacturer driver with a generic one.
12. Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter
Windows 11 places its automated troubleshooters in the Get Help system.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Audio or Playing Audio.
- Select Run.
- Choose the M3 or USB audio output when asked.
- Apply only changes that match the detected problem.
The troubleshooter may restore a disabled device, restart an audio service, change the default output or identify a driver problem.
Check the selected output afterward because the troubleshooter may switch Windows back to another device during testing.
13. Restart Windows Audio Services
The M3 can appear in Device Manager while remaining unavailable to applications if a Windows audio service has stopped.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
services.msc. - Select OK.
- Find Windows Audio.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Restart it as well.
- Confirm that both services use the Automatic startup type.
If the services stop again immediately, a third-party audio utility, damaged system file or other driver may be interfering. Note any error message shown in Services or Event Viewer before making further changes.
14. Use a Compatible Audio Format
An unsupported or unstable format can cause silence, an application error, crackling or failure when switching between programs.
To change the format:
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the SMSL M3 output.
- Find Format under Output settings.
- Start with a common two-channel format such as 16-bit or 24-bit at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz.
- Test audio.
You can also use the classic panel:
- Open More sound settings.
- Double-click the M3 on the Playback tab.
- Open Advanced.
- Select a common supported format.
- Select Test.
Do not assume the highest number is automatically best. Music recorded at 44.1 kHz does not become more detailed merely because Windows resamples it to a much higher rate. Stability and application compatibility are more important during troubleshooting.
15. Turn Off Audio Enhancements and Spatial Sound
Enhancement software can interfere with USB DAC playback.
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the M3 output.
- Set Audio enhancements to Off.
- Set Spatial sound to Off.
- Test the DAC again.
Also temporarily close third-party audio tools such as virtual mixers, equalizers, surround utilities, motherboard audio suites and sound-routing applications.

16. Disable Exclusive Mode for Testing
Music players and professional audio applications can request exclusive control of a device. While one app owns the M3, browsers, games and other programs may be unable to play sound.
To test shared mode:
- Open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings.
- Double-click the M3 on the Playback tab.
- Open Advanced.
- Clear Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
- Clear Give exclusive mode applications priority.
- Select Apply.
- Restart the affected applications.
You can re-enable exclusive mode later if you deliberately use WASAPI Exclusive or another bit-perfect playback configuration.
When troubleshooting, begin with ordinary Windows shared playback. Add ASIO4ALL, virtual audio cables, equalizers or exclusive output only after the M3 works normally. The M3’s no-driver design does not mean you must install a third-party ASIO wrapper.
17. Disable USB Selective Suspend Temporarily
Windows can reduce power to idle USB devices. On some systems, the DAC may fail to reconnect after sleep or may disconnect during playback.
To test USB selective suspend:
- Search for Edit power plan and open it.
- Select Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB settings.
- Expand USB selective suspend setting.
- Set it to Disabled for testing.
- Select Apply > OK.
- Restart the computer.
The USB setting may not appear on every Windows 11 device.
You can also inspect USB hub power management:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Open the properties of a USB Root Hub or Generic USB Hub associated with the M3.
- Open Power Management.
- Clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Restart Windows.
Change one hub at a time and keep a note of the original setting. Laptop battery life may decrease slightly when USB power saving is disabled.
18. Check Fast Startup and Sleep Behavior
If the M3 works after a restart but not after shutdown or sleep, Windows may be restoring a problematic hardware state.
Try a full shutdown first:
- Hold Shift.
- Select Start > Power > Shut down while continuing to hold Shift.
- Wait for the computer to turn off.
- Disconnect the M3 for 30 seconds.
- Start Windows and reconnect the DAC.
If that consistently works, test with Fast Startup disabled:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Select Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Clear Turn on fast startup.
- Save the change.
Fast Startup is not always responsible, so re-enable it if disabling it makes no difference.
19. Repair Windows System Files
Damaged Windows audio or USB components can prevent a class-compliant device from loading correctly.
Open Terminal as administrator and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
After it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart the computer after both scans finish.

System-file repair is not the first step for an M3 problem. Use it when multiple USB or audio devices are affected, Windows services fail, or Device Manager problems continue with known-good hardware.
20. Perform a Clean Boot
A clean boot helps identify conflicts from third-party audio software and startup services without removing applications.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
msconfig. - Open the Services tab.
- Select Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab.
- Select Open Task Manager.
- Disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart Windows and test the M3.
If the DAC works, re-enable services and startup items in small groups until the conflict returns.
Common causes include virtual audio drivers, recording utilities, motherboard sound suites, old DAC software, RGB control programs, USB-device managers and system-tuning tools.
Return the computer to normal startup after testing.
Fix SMSL M3 Not Detected in Windows 11
When the M3 is completely absent from Sound settings and Device Manager, use this order:
- Confirm the M3 has power.
- Select USB input.
- Replace the cable with a verified data cable.
- Connect directly to another USB port.
- Disconnect docks and unnecessary USB devices.
- Perform a full power cycle.
- Check Device Manager while reconnecting the DAC.
- Test the M3 on another computer.
If the second computer also shows no reaction with more than one working cable, the M3’s USB input or connector may be faulty.
If Windows reacts but displays an unknown USB device, uninstall that entry, restart, and reconnect. A Device Manager error code will help distinguish a damaged configuration from a hardware report.
Fix SMSL M3 Connected but No Sound
If Windows detects the M3 but there is no audio:
- Select the M3 under Settings > System > Sound > Output.
- Select USB input on the DAC.
- Increase Windows volume.
- Raise the M3 volume gradually.
- Confirm the app is not muted in Volume mixer.
- Set the M3 as the default playback device.
- Restart the app.
- Test headphones directly from the M3.
- If using RCA, confirm the connected speakers are powered or the amplifier is on.
- Try a common 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz format.
- Disable enhancements, spatial sound and exclusive mode.
Watch the Windows audio meter. If it does not move, the application may be paused, muted or assigned to another device. If it moves but the M3 remains silent, the problem is farther down the signal chain.
Fix SMSL M3 Code 10
Code 10 means Windows could not start the device.
Try:
- Disconnect the M3.
- Uninstall its Device Manager entry.
- Restart Windows.
- Connect it through another USB port and cable.
- Install Windows and chipset updates.
- Remove unofficial DAC drivers or audio wrappers.
- Test the M3 on another computer.
Repeated Code 10 on multiple computers with different cables increases the likelihood of a hardware fault.
Fix SMSL M3 Code 39
Code 39 generally indicates that Windows cannot load the required driver because the driver or a related configuration is damaged or missing.
Use this sequence:
- Uninstall the M3 or USB audio entry in Device Manager.
- Remove any unofficial SMSL or third-party USB audio driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the M3 and let Windows install its built-in support.
- Run Windows Update.
- Run DISM and SFC if the error remains.
Do not download a random “Code 39 driver fix.” The M3 should not require an unsigned third-party driver.
Fix SMSL M3 Code 43
Code 43 means Windows stopped the device after the hardware or driver reported a problem. It does not identify one exact cause.
Check:
- USB cable
- USB connector
- Direct USB port
- Power stability
- USB hub or dock
- Windows USB controller
- The M3 on another computer
If Code 43 follows the M3 to a second computer, the DAC’s USB interface may need professional inspection or replacement.
Fix “USB Device Not Recognized”
This message usually appears before Windows can load an audio driver. Focus on the physical USB connection first.
- Disconnect the M3.
- Shut down the computer.
- Remove power from the M3.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Start Windows.
- Connect the M3 using another data cable and direct port.
- Open Device Manager and remove the failed unknown USB entry if it returns.
Do not spend time changing Windows output settings until the USB device is successfully detected.
Fix Crackling, Popping or Audio Dropouts
For unstable sound:
- Use a different short USB data cable.
- Connect directly to a rear motherboard port on a desktop.
- Avoid a busy hub or docking station.
- Select 24-bit 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz for testing.
- Disable audio enhancements and spatial sound.
- Close virtual mixers, equalizers and audio-routing tools.
- Disable exclusive mode temporarily.
- Disable USB selective suspend for testing.
- Install chipset and USB controller updates from the PC manufacturer.
- Return CPU, memory and USB overclocking or undervolting to stable defaults.
If the noise occurs only in one application, increase that application’s audio buffer if it provides the option. If it occurs only when the computer is under heavy load, driver latency, USB contention or an unstable system configuration may be involved.
Buzzing that changes when a laptop charger, monitor or powered speaker is connected may be an electrical grounding problem rather than a Windows driver fault. Test the DAC with headphones and unnecessary equipment disconnected. Do not defeat protective grounding to remove noise.
Fix the M3 Disconnecting After Sleep
When the M3 disappears after the computer wakes:
- Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable.
- Power-cycle the M3.
- Disable USB selective suspend.
- Disable the relevant USB hub’s power-management option.
- Update chipset and USB controller drivers.
- Test another direct USB port.
- Disable Fast Startup temporarily.
If reconnecting restores the device every time, the USB resume process is more likely than a failed audio output.
Why the M3 May Not Appear When Using Optical
An optical cable carries a digital audio signal but does not provide the same device communication as USB. Windows sees the computer’s optical transmitter, not the DAC receiving the signal.
Choose Digital Audio, S/PDIF or the motherboard sound device as the Windows output. Then select optical input on the M3.
If there is still no sound, choose a two-channel PCM format. Some DACs will not decode every compressed surround format sent by a television, game console or media application. Set the source to PCM stereo for testing.
A Reliable Clean-Reinstallation Sequence
If earlier attempts have left several duplicate or failed USB audio entries, use this controlled reset:
- Uninstall unofficial DAC software from Installed apps.
- Disconnect the M3.
- Open Device Manager.
- Select View > Show hidden devices.
- Remove only failed or duplicate entries known to belong to the M3.
- Restart Windows.
- Install current Windows and computer chipset updates.
- Shut down fully.
- Start Windows without the M3.
- Connect it directly with a verified data cable.
- Wait for automatic configuration.
- Select the new USB audio output in Sound settings.
Do not combine this with registry cleaners or bulk driver-removal tools. A controlled reset makes it easier to identify which action solves the problem.
When the Problem Is Probably Hardware
Software troubleshooting is less likely to help when:
- The M3 does not power on.
- Its USB connector is loose or physically damaged.
- Multiple known-good data cables fail.
- Several computers cannot detect it.
- Code 43 follows the device to another computer.
- The DAC disconnects when the connector is touched.
- No input produces sound through known-working headphones.
- The enclosure becomes abnormally hot.
- There is a burning smell, smoke or visible electrical damage.
Stop using the device if it overheats, smells burnt or shows signs of electrical damage.
Testing another computer is one of the most useful final checks. If the M3 works there, return to the original computer’s USB controller, Windows configuration and software. If it fails in the same way on both systems, the DAC, cable or power arrangement deserves closer inspection.
