AirDrop Not Working or Keeps Failing? How to Fix It

AirDrop Not Working or Keeps Failing? How to Fix It

AirDrop is usually one of the fastest ways to move photos, videos, documents, links, and other files between an iPhone, iPad, and Mac. When it stops working, though, the failure can be confusing because both devices may look perfectly normal.

If AirDrop is not working, keeps failing, cannot find the other device, or gets stuck while sending, the problem is usually caused by one of a few things: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is off, the receiving device is not discoverable, the devices are too far apart, Personal Hotspot is interfering, Contacts Only cannot verify the other person, or one of the devices needs a restart or software update.

I recommend starting with the simple connection checks before resetting network settings or changing advanced options. In many cases, AirDrop begins working again after correcting discoverability or restarting the wireless connection.

Quick Fixes When AirDrop Is Not Working

Try these first:

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi on both devices.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth on both devices.
  3. Move the devices close together.
  4. Turn off Personal Hotspot while testing.
  5. Set the receiving device to Everyone for 10 Minutes temporarily.
  6. Make sure both devices are unlocked and awake.
  7. Restart both devices.
  8. Try sending a small photo before testing a large video or folder.
  9. Update iOS, iPadOS, or macOS if an update is available.

Apple currently recommends checking Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirDrop receiving settings, proximity, and restarting the devices when AirDrop does not work.

Why Does AirDrop Not Work?

AirDrop depends on several Apple wireless and privacy features working together.

The most common causes are:

  • Wi-Fi is turned off
  • Bluetooth is turned off
  • Personal Hotspot is active
  • AirDrop is set to Receiving Off
  • Contacts Only cannot identify the sender
  • The devices are too far apart
  • One device is locked or sleeping
  • The operating system is outdated
  • A temporary Wi-Fi or Bluetooth problem has occurred
  • The transfer is unusually large
  • The Mac firewall or sharing configuration is interfering
  • A VPN or network filter is creating a conflict
  • The devices are not compatible with the type of AirDrop transfer being attempted

The right fix depends on whether the devices cannot see each other at all or whether the transfer begins and then fails.

1. Make Sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Are On

AirDrop requires both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

On iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Wi-Fi.
  3. Make sure Wi-Fi is on.
  4. Go back.
  5. Tap Bluetooth.
  6. Make sure Bluetooth is on.

On Mac:

  1. Click Control Center in the menu bar.
  2. Confirm that Wi-Fi is on.
  3. Confirm that Bluetooth is on.

You do not normally need both devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network. AirDrop can create a direct wireless connection between nearby Apple devices.

However, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must still be enabled.

If Bluetooth is behaving abnormally across other Apple features too, my Bluetooth Connected But CarPlay Not Working? Fix It guide can help you separate a broader Bluetooth or Wi-Fi problem from an AirDrop-only problem.

2. Move the Devices Closer

AirDrop is designed for nearby devices.

Apple recommends keeping the devices within about:

30 feet or 10 meters

of each other.

For troubleshooting, I would move them much closer.

Put the iPhone next to the Mac or hold two iPhones close together.

Walls, crowded wireless environments, and physical distance can make discovery less reliable.

If AirDrop works when the devices are beside each other but fails across a room, distance or interference is probably involved.

3. Change AirDrop to Everyone for 10 Minutes

A very common problem is that the receiving device is not discoverable.

On iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap AirDrop.
  4. Choose Everyone for 10 Minutes.

You can also use Control Center:

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Touch and hold the connectivity panel.
  3. Tap AirDrop.
  4. Choose Everyone for 10 Minutes.

On Mac:

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Click AirDrop.
  3. Turn it on.
  4. Allow discovery from the appropriate users.

Use Everyone temporarily for testing.

If AirDrop works immediately after changing from Contacts Only to Everyone, the problem is probably contact verification rather than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

If you need the full setup steps for iPhone and Mac, see How to Turn AirDrop On or Off on iPhone and Mac.

4. Fix Contacts Only Not Working

Contacts Only sounds simple, but it depends on Apple being able to identify the other person correctly.

For Contacts Only to work, the recipient needs the sender saved in Contacts with the correct Apple Account email address or phone number.

Check the sender’s contact card.

Make sure it includes the email address or phone number used with the sender’s Apple Account.

If the information is missing or incorrect, AirDrop may not recognize the sender as a contact.

For a quick transfer, switch to:

Everyone for 10 Minutes

Then return to Contacts Only afterward.

5. Turn Off Personal Hotspot

Apple specifically recommends disconnecting Personal Hotspot when AirDrop is not working.

On iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot.
  3. Turn off Allow Others to Join while testing.

Then try AirDrop again.

Personal Hotspot also uses wireless connections, so turning it off temporarily removes one possible conflict.

You can turn it back on after the AirDrop transfer.

6. Unlock Both Devices

Keep both devices awake and unlocked while troubleshooting.

If an iPhone is locked, sleeping, or sitting with the display off for a long time, AirDrop discovery may be less predictable.

Unlock both devices.

Open the file again and restart the AirDrop transfer.

On a Mac, wake the computer completely and make sure the user account is signed in.

7. Restart AirDrop

Sometimes AirDrop’s wireless discovery simply needs to be refreshed.

On iPhone:

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Set AirDrop to Receiving Off.
  3. Wait several seconds.
  4. Change it back to Contacts Only or Everyone for 10 Minutes.

On Mac:

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Turn AirDrop off.
  3. Wait several seconds.
  4. Turn it back on.

Then retry the transfer.

8. Toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

If restarting AirDrop itself does not help, refresh Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

On iPhone, I prefer using Settings rather than simply tapping the Control Center icons.

Go to:

Settings > Wi-Fi

Turn Wi-Fi off.

Wait about 10 seconds.

Turn it back on.

Then go to:

Settings > Bluetooth

Turn Bluetooth off.

Wait about 10 seconds.

Turn it back on.

Do the same on the Mac through Control Center or System Settings.

Try AirDrop again.

9. Restart the iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Apple recommends restarting the devices when AirDrop will not work.

A restart clears temporary processes and reloads Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sharing, and AirDrop services.

Restart both the sender and recipient rather than only one device.

After both start again:

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth.
  3. Set the recipient to Everyone for 10 Minutes.
  4. Try sending one small photo.

If a small photo works, AirDrop itself is functioning and the original file or transfer size may be the issue.

10. Try Bringing Two iPhones Together

On supported iPhones running recent iOS versions, Apple supports starting an AirDrop transfer by bringing the devices close together.

If both devices use iOS 17 or later, try placing the top of one iPhone near the top of the other.

This can help when the devices are not appearing normally in the AirDrop list.

Make sure both phones are unlocked and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled.

11. Try a Small File First

If AirDrop keeps failing, do not keep testing with a huge video library or large folder.

Start with:

  • One photo
  • One screenshot
  • A small PDF
  • A simple webpage link

If the small file transfers successfully but the large one fails, basic AirDrop discovery is working.

For photo and video-specific transfer steps, including multiple photos and large videos, see How to AirDrop Photos and Videos on iPhone.

The issue may be related to:

  • File size
  • Number of files
  • Available storage
  • Device heat
  • Temporary transfer interruption
  • The app generating the share

This distinction can save a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting.

12. Check Available Storage

A receiving device needs enough storage for the incoming file.

On iPhone:

Settings > General > iPhone Storage

On Mac:

Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage

If the device is almost full, free some space and retry the transfer.

Large videos can require several gigabytes of free storage.

Do not assume a failed AirDrop transfer is a wireless problem if the destination has almost no available space.

13. Try Sharing From Another App

Sometimes the problem is limited to the app you are sharing from.

For example, if a file will not AirDrop from one third-party app:

  1. Save or export the file to Files.
  2. Open the Files app.
  3. Select the file.
  4. Tap Share.
  5. Choose AirDrop.

For a photo or video, test directly from the Photos app.

If AirDrop works from Photos or Files but not from one specific app, the app may be the problem.

Update or restart that app before changing system settings.

14. Update iOS, iPadOS, and macOS

Software updates can fix wireless, sharing, and compatibility problems.

On iPhone or iPad:

Settings > General > Software Update

On Mac:

Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update

Install the latest stable update available for the device.

Back up important information first.

If AirDrop began failing immediately after an update, check again for a newer maintenance update before performing drastic resets.

15. Why Can’t I AirDrop to My Mac?

This is one of the most useful symptoms to isolate.

If your iPhone can AirDrop to other iPhones but cannot AirDrop to your Mac, focus on the Mac.

Check these items:

  • Wi-Fi is on
  • Bluetooth is on
  • AirDrop is enabled
  • The Mac allows the correct discovery setting
  • The Mac is awake and unlocked
  • The Mac is close to the iPhone
  • macOS is updated
  • The Mac has enough storage
  • The firewall is not blocking necessary connections

Open Finder.

Click:

AirDrop

in the sidebar.

Look for:

Allow me to be discovered by

Set the Mac to an option that allows the iPhone to find it.

If Contacts Only fails, use the more open option temporarily while testing.

16. Open AirDrop in Finder on the Mac

If the Mac does not appear on the iPhone, open Finder and leave the AirDrop page visible.

Steps:

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Click AirDrop in the sidebar.
  3. Set the discoverability option appropriately.
  4. Leave the window open.
  5. Try AirDrop again from the iPhone.

Opening the AirDrop pane can make it easier to confirm whether the Mac itself is ready to receive.

17. Check Mac AirDrop Settings

On current macOS versions, you can also review AirDrop through:

Apple menu > System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff

Check who is allowed to send files to the Mac.

If it is restricted too tightly, the iPhone may not appear.

For testing, temporarily choose the more permissive AirDrop option, complete the transfer, and then restore your preferred privacy setting.

18. Check the Mac Firewall

If your Mac is discoverable but transfers repeatedly fail, review the firewall.

Go to:

Apple menu > System Settings > Network > Firewall

The exact layout can vary by macOS version.

If the firewall is active, open its options and check whether settings are blocking incoming connections too aggressively.

Do not permanently disable the firewall simply because AirDrop failed once.

Instead, test carefully and restore normal security settings afterward.

If the Mac is managed by a workplace or school, do not change firewall or security profiles without administrator approval.

19. Temporarily Disconnect VPNs and Network Filters

A VPN normally affects internet traffic more than AirDrop’s nearby wireless connection, but security software and network filters can still create unexpected conflicts.

Temporarily disconnect:

  • VPN apps
  • Third-party firewalls
  • Network filtering software
  • Security tools that inspect local traffic

Then test AirDrop.

If AirDrop works only when one app is disabled, update or reconfigure that app.

Do not remove managed workplace VPN or security profiles without permission.

20. Make Sure the Devices Are Compatible

AirDrop works between supported Apple devices.

It is designed for devices such as:

  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Mac

A Windows PC or Android phone does not appear as a normal AirDrop recipient.

If you are trying to transfer from iPhone to Windows or Android, use a different sharing method.

For cross-platform Bluetooth and wireless problems, do not assume a device is broken simply because it does not support Apple’s AirDrop protocol.

21. Accept the AirDrop Prompt

When someone sends you an AirDrop item, the receiving device may display an Accept or Decline prompt.

Tap:

Accept

If you miss or decline the prompt, the transfer will not complete.

When sending between your own Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account, Apple can accept the transfer automatically.

That difference is normal.

22. Check AirDrop Codes on Newer Apple Software

On newer Apple software, AirDrop can use a code when sharing with someone who is not in your contacts.

On iOS 26.2, iPadOS 26.2, macOS 26.2, or later, a non-contact AirDrop transfer may ask for an AirDrop code.

The receiving device displays the code.

The sender enters it.

If you ignore this verification step, you may think AirDrop is stuck when it is actually waiting for confirmation.

Read every prompt on both devices instead of dismissing it.

23. Turn Off Content and Privacy Restrictions Temporarily

Screen Time restrictions can interfere with features on an iPhone.

Open:

Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions

Review the allowed apps and features.

If AirDrop is restricted on a family, school, or managed device, you may not be able to enable it yourself.

Do not remove management profiles or parental controls without authorization.

24. Check Whether AirDrop Is Missing From Control Center

If AirDrop does not appear where expected, open:

Settings > General > AirDrop

If the option is available there, manage it from Settings.

If AirDrop is completely missing or cannot be changed, check:

  • Screen Time restrictions
  • Device management
  • Software version
  • Whether the device supports AirDrop

A managed workplace or school device can restrict sharing features.

25. Reset Network Settings on iPhone

Use a network reset only after the simpler steps fail.

Go to:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings

Enter the passcode and confirm.

This resets network-related configuration.

You will need to reconnect to saved Wi-Fi networks afterward.

It can also require reconnecting Bluetooth accessories and other network services.

A network reset does not erase your photos or apps, but it creates setup work, so I would not use it as the first AirDrop fix.

If wireless problems also affect features such as CarPlay, my CarPlay Keeps Disconnecting? Try These Fixes article explains how to separate iPhone network problems from problems on the other device.

26. Sign Out of the Apple Account Only as a Last Resort

Some troubleshooting pages recommend signing out of iCloud or the Apple Account immediately.

I would avoid doing that early.

Signing out affects:

  • iCloud synchronization
  • Photos
  • Contacts
  • Messages
  • Find My
  • Wallet-related services
  • Other Apple features

If AirDrop works with Everyone for 10 Minutes but not Contacts Only, correct the contact information first.

If AirDrop fails completely, exhaust Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, restart, update, discoverability, hotspot, and network-reset steps before considering an Apple Account sign-out.

27. Test AirDrop With Another Device

Testing another Apple device is one of the fastest ways to locate the problem.

Example:

Your iPhone cannot AirDrop to your Mac.

Try:

  • The iPhone to another iPhone
  • Another iPhone to the same Mac
  • The Mac to another Apple device

Results help narrow the fault.

If Your iPhone Fails With Every Device

Focus on:

  • iPhone Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • iOS
  • AirDrop settings
  • Network configuration

If Only One Mac Fails

Focus on:

  • Mac AirDrop settings
  • macOS
  • Mac firewall
  • Bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi
  • Available storage

If Every Device Fails With One Recipient

The recipient is likely the source of the problem.

28. Restart the Mac’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

If only the Mac fails:

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi off.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off.
  4. Wait about 10 seconds.
  5. Turn Wi-Fi back on.
  6. Turn Bluetooth back on.
  7. Open Finder > AirDrop.
  8. Retry.

If that fails, restart the Mac.

This is safer than immediately deleting network files or changing Terminal settings.

29. Avoid Random Terminal Commands

AirDrop troubleshooting guides sometimes recommend deleting system preference files, killing processes, or running undocumented Terminal commands.

Do not start there.

AirDrop is closely integrated with macOS networking and Continuity services.

An outdated command copied from an old forum post can create additional problems.

Use standard Apple settings and supported troubleshooting steps first.

30. Try Another Network Environment

AirDrop does not require both devices to use the same normal Wi-Fi network, but crowded wireless environments can still cause interference.

If AirDrop repeatedly fails in one location:

  • Move away from crowded Wi-Fi
  • Move away from many Bluetooth devices
  • Test in another room
  • Disconnect unnecessary wireless accessories
  • Place the devices close together

If AirDrop works elsewhere, interference is a stronger suspect than a damaged device.

Why Does AirDrop Keep Failing?

If AirDrop discovers the recipient but repeatedly fails after you select it, I would focus on these causes:

  • Unstable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
  • Large transfer
  • Too many files
  • Low storage
  • Device overheating
  • Temporary software problem
  • The receiving app or device is not responding
  • The recipient moved out of range

Try one small photo first.

If that works, gradually increase the transfer size.

This helps distinguish a general AirDrop failure from a problem caused by the specific files.

Why Does AirDrop Say Waiting?

A waiting status usually means the transfer has not completed the connection or acceptance stage.

Check:

  • Recipient is unlocked
  • AirDrop is enabled
  • Recipient is discoverable
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on
  • The recipient has accepted the transfer
  • Devices are close
  • Personal Hotspot is off

Cancel the attempt and start it again after changing the receiving device to Everyone for 10 Minutes. If you need to stop a transfer you started by mistake, see How to Cancel AirDrop on iPhone or Mac.

Why Does AirDrop Get Stuck on Sending?

If the transfer starts but the progress does not move:

  1. Cancel the transfer.
  2. Keep both devices awake.
  3. Move them closer.
  4. Turn AirDrop off and back on.
  5. Test one small file.
  6. Check storage.
  7. Restart both devices.

If large transfers alone fail, divide them into smaller groups.

For very large photo or video libraries, AirDrop may not be the most practical transfer method.

Why Does AirDrop Fail From iPhone to Mac?

If iPhone-to-iPhone AirDrop works but iPhone-to-Mac fails:

  1. Open Finder > AirDrop on the Mac.
  2. Confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  3. Change Mac discoverability.
  4. Wake and unlock the Mac.
  5. Update macOS.
  6. Check firewall settings.
  7. Check Mac storage.
  8. Restart the Mac.

This strongly points toward the Mac rather than the iPhone.

Why Does AirDrop Work One Way but Not the Other?

For example:

  • Mac can send to iPhone
  • iPhone cannot send to Mac

That usually means the receiving settings differ.

Check the device that cannot receive.

AirDrop sending and AirDrop receiving are not the same thing.

A device can sometimes send successfully while its receiving discoverability prevents others from seeing it.

Why Does AirDrop Fail With Contacts Only?

Contacts Only depends on identity matching.

Check:

  • Correct phone number
  • Correct Apple Account email
  • Correct contact card
  • Both users signed in properly

If you do not want to troubleshoot the contact record during a one-time transfer, use Everyone for 10 Minutes.

Why Did AirDrop Stop Working After an iOS Update?

An update can coincide with:

  • Wireless configuration changes
  • New AirDrop privacy behavior
  • Temporary software bugs
  • Contact recognition changes
  • A device needing a restart

Restart both devices first.

Then check for another update.

Do not immediately factory-reset the iPhone.

Why Did AirDrop Stop Working After a macOS Update?

Restart the Mac and verify that:

  • Wi-Fi is on
  • Bluetooth is on
  • AirDrop discoverability is correct
  • Firewall settings are normal
  • The Mac has finished background update tasks

If only the Mac fails, test another Apple device with it.

Does AirDrop Need Internet?

For ordinary nearby AirDrop discovery and transfer, the devices use direct wireless communication rather than relying on a normal internet connection between them.

Apple still requires Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be enabled.

On newer systems, Apple also supports continuing an already-started AirDrop transfer over the internet if the devices move out of direct range.

For troubleshooting the initial connection, keep both devices nearby with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on.

Does AirDrop Need the Same Wi-Fi Network?

No.

Both devices need Wi-Fi enabled, but they do not normally need to be connected to the same router.

AirDrop creates a direct connection between compatible nearby Apple devices.

Does AirDrop Work With Personal Hotspot On?

Apple recommends disconnecting Personal Hotspot before using AirDrop when troubleshooting.

If AirDrop is failing, turn Personal Hotspot off and retry.

Can AirDrop Fail Because the iPhone Is Too Hot?

Heat can affect performance and wireless behavior.

If the iPhone is unusually hot:

  • Stop charging temporarily
  • Move it out of direct sunlight
  • Remove a thick case if appropriate
  • Stop demanding apps
  • Let it cool naturally

Do not put an overheated iPhone in a refrigerator, freezer, or against ice.

Can a VPN Stop AirDrop?

A VPN is not normally required for AirDrop and does not control basic nearby discovery, but some security apps and network filters can interfere with local networking.

Temporarily disable the VPN as a test.

If AirDrop begins working, update or reconfigure the VPN app.

Do not remove work or school security profiles without permission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does AirDrop not work?

The most common causes are Wi-Fi or Bluetooth being off, the recipient not being discoverable, Personal Hotspot being active, Contacts Only not recognizing the sender, or a temporary device problem.

Why did my AirDrop fail?

The devices may have lost their wireless connection, moved too far apart, run low on storage, or encountered a temporary software issue.

Why does AirDrop keep failing?

Repeated failure usually points to unstable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, large transfers, insufficient storage, software problems, or a problem specific to one sender or recipient.

Why can’t I AirDrop to my Mac?

Make sure the Mac has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, AirDrop enabled, the correct discoverability setting, enough storage, and current macOS software.

How do I make my Mac discoverable for AirDrop?

Open Finder > AirDrop and change Allow me to be discovered by to the appropriate option. You can also manage AirDrop through Control Center or System Settings.

Why can’t AirDrop find the other iPhone?

Set the recipient to Everyone for 10 Minutes, keep both phones unlocked, enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, turn off Personal Hotspot, and move the devices closer.

Should I reset network settings for AirDrop?

Only after simpler fixes fail. A network reset removes saved network configuration and requires reconnecting to Wi-Fi and other wireless services.

Should I factory-reset my iPhone because AirDrop is not working?

No. A factory reset is far too disruptive as an early fix. Test settings, restart, update software, and reset network settings first.

Can AirDrop work without Bluetooth?

No. Bluetooth needs to be enabled for AirDrop discovery.

Can AirDrop work without Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi also needs to be enabled for normal AirDrop operation.

Does AirDrop require both devices to use the same Apple Account?

No.

AirDrop can send files between different people’s Apple devices.

Why is AirDrop stuck on Waiting?

The receiving device may not be discoverable, may still need to accept the transfer, or the devices may not be completing the wireless connection.

Why is AirDrop stuck on Sending?

Check distance, storage, wireless stability, and file size. Cancel the transfer and test a small file.

Does restarting fix AirDrop?

It often does. Apple specifically recommends restarting when AirDrop is not working.

Fix the Basic AirDrop Connection Before Resetting Anything

When AirDrop is not working or keeps failing, start with the basics rather than changing advanced settings.

Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, move the devices close together, turn off Personal Hotspot, and temporarily set the recipient to Everyone for 10 Minutes. If Contacts Only fails, check that the sender’s correct Apple Account phone number or email address is stored in Contacts.

When an iPhone can AirDrop to other devices but not to a Mac, focus on the Mac’s discoverability, Finder AirDrop settings, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, firewall, storage, and macOS version.

Restart both devices before using a network reset. If one small file transfers but a large batch fails, AirDrop itself is working and the problem is more likely related to file size, storage, heat, or transfer stability.
